The canton is a modified Ghana national flag with the black star being absent.
This form of the national flag was in use from 1964 - 1966 after the President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, ordered that the yellow stripe be replaced with white to correspond to the flag of his Convention People's Party.
 
The yellow stripe with the black star was restored in 1966 after Nkrumah was overthrown.
